We once again gratify all who have proved the courage, power and success of the Turkish woman to the whole world …
First Turkish Female Chemist: Prof. Dr. Remziye Hisar
She is the first Turkish woman that graduated from Sorbonne University in France and the first female chemist of the Republic of Turkey. Remziye Hisar, a Republican woman who lost her life in 1992; she worked as a doy in chemistry and physico-chemistry at Istanbul University between 1933 and 1936.
First Turkish Female Construction Engineer and Volleyball player: Sabiha Rıfat Gürayan
Güreyman who came to the world in a Monastery in 1910 and graduated from Istanbul Girls’ High School and entered the Higher Engineer School in 1927 (present Istanbul Technical University) as Turkey’s first female civil engineer. She worked as a chief engineer for 10 years at the construction of Anıtkabir. She is also first Turkish female volleyball player.
First Turkish Female Architect: Prof. Dr. Leman Cevat Tomsu
She is one of the first two women to receive an architectural diploma in Turkey (Mr. Münevver Belen is another valuable architect). As the first female architect to register at the Istanbul Chamber of Architects, Tomsu has an important place in the history of architecture.
Between 1936 and 1959, Tomsu had 17 application projects, and between 1938-1954 she won 14 awards, including 5 in the competition.
First Female Doctor: Safiye Ali
Born in Istanbul in 1891, Safiye Ali was a student at the American College for Girls. After seeing many casualties during the Balkan War, she decided to become a doctor, and went to Germany to study medicine. Safiye Ali, who was trained in the diseases of women and children, started her clinic treatment in Cagaloglu by returning home after the War of Independence. She represented Turkey in many medical congresses held abroad.
First Turkish Female Sculptor: Sabiha Bengutaş
Sabiha Bengutaş, who made sculptures of the great names of our history such as Atatürk, Ismet İnönü, Abdülhak Hamid, Ahmet Haşim, Bedia Mujahid, is the first female sculptor.
First Turkish Female Lawyer: Süreyya Ağaoğlu
Süreyya Ağaoğlu, the first female lawyer of our history, is also the founder of the Children’s Friends Association. Having also served as a member of the International Jurisprudence Commission, Ağaoğlu has also served as a member of the Administrative Board of the International Bar Association and was also a women’s rights advocate.
First Turkish Woman Pilot: Sabiha Gökçen
Sabiha Gökçen, who used the first aircraft of Turkey in 1912 and who was the spiritual daughter of Atatürk, was Turkey’s first female military pilot. It is known that Atatürk trained herself to show that Turkish women could succeed in every field.
